Portrait of a butcher

Daguerreotype, 1/9 plate
Archives of Modern Conflict OR National Gallery of Canada
A small handwritten label came with this image. All it said is "Butcher on the day of his wedding". He sports a wonderful stovepipe hat and dress clothing peek from beneath his butcher's smock. The blood-like coloring added to the knife blade makes a dramatic but confusing statement. (Matt Isenburg)

Butcher with Rabbits

Ambrotype, 1/4 plate
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs - Auction (Skylight Gallery Catalog 28,April 30, 2009, #21)

Showing a butcher with two rabbits. Pink tinting applied to butcher's face and hands. Housed in a period passe-partout mount with faux tortoiseshell design. Overall dimensions of mount 6 x 5 inches (15x12 cm).

An extremely unusual image of a French butcher preparing this tasty foodstuff. Despite numerous pet rabbit images, this image of a rabbit being prepared for food is the first such I have seen. In the 19th-century and earlier, animals (particularly small ones like rabbits) were killed much closer to the time of consumption. (Christopher Wahren)

Cabinet card

Outstanding cabinet card of a butcher sharpening his large knife while preparing to carve a large slice of beef. A hacksaw is attached to the table for the more difficult cuts. Dressed in a heavy coat with wool cuffs, he wears his apron to prevent his clothes from being bloodstained. To illustrate the unsanitary conditions of the time some remnants at the back of the saw blade are noticeable.

A Newhaven fish seller vending her wares in front of an elaborate studio backdrop, by Douglas, Edinburgh. Card imprinted front "Newhaven Fishwife / Douglas / Edinburgh." Reverse blank.

The painting of the background in this image blends well with the sitters to create the picture of a housewife or maid negotiating for the purchase of fish fresh from the day's catch. She regards the large fish resting on her plate with a critical eye, as the fish-seller holds another. (Christopher Wahren)

When I photographed the Hawaiian Islands after the war, I was happy to find there was still a great deal of native tradition and folklore. My book Hawaii immortalizes some of the islands' wonderful but vanishing native people , and my friend Stanley Stubenberg, who was born in Hawaii, knew nothing of this book before we met and told me of the impact my pictures had made. This fisherman, photographed on the coast of Oahu, was throwing his net for the daily catch a beautiful image of strength and motion accompanied by the thunder of the Hawaiian surf."
