Curational comment from "Dawn's Early Light: The First 50 Years of American Photography", October 20, 2011 - May 4, 2012, Hirshland Exhibition Gallery in Carl A. Kroch Library, Cornell University

By 1864, when this photograph was taken, the use of albumen paper was commonplace in photography. This photographer nevertheless chose the older salted paper process because its mat surface was more receptive to paint. This pair of photographs shows that the quest for verisimilitude sometimes involved not only adding color but also placing the subject in a naturalistic setting.

Hand-coloring ranged from lightly tinting cheeks or adding a sparkle to the eye to masterfully applied paints to create portraits virtually indistinguishable from a traditional painting. This lavishly painted photograph portrait demonstrates the merging of the two arts.

Elaborately hand-colored, with color samples and pencil notations with the name of the pigments in the margins, plus a hand-drawn identification in French. The colored print with its directions was given to a painter who was working on the restoration as a guide to the colors to be applied to the actual arch in its restoration.

Photographic Painting of a Maiko

Unknown artist, unknown process, on silk(?) and pasted-down on new card, ca. 1890, measures 500 x 350mm, very light foxing and otherwise in excellent condition. Hand colouring of photographs with water colours had been common in Japan from the 1860s. But in the late 1870s the well-known photographer, Yokoyama Matsusaburo, started experimenting with a number of printing techniques and also developed a form of photographic oil painting (shashin abura-e). This involved peeling off the emulsion covering the face of a photograph and then painting the rear side with oil paints. One of his students, Azukizawa Ryoichi, developed and patented his own technique and described himself as a "Patent Oil-Painter on Photograph and Lithograph, and Common Oil-Painter and Photographer." In 1885 he was granted a fifteen-year patent and he applied this strange technique to the standard photographs of views and costumes usually found in souvenir albums. A number of Meiji-era photographers seem to have experimented with similar methods and with mixed results. Of the examples seen, it is difficult to tell whether the pictures are photographs or paintings.

The Umbrella Farm

Lantern slide, vignette detail
Private collection of Rob Oechsle
Close examination of the original slide reveals that, aside from the interspersed varying green grass, Enami's colorist also applied over 700 individual curved applications of alternating yellow and red stripes to the umbrellas, rarely allowing any bleed outside the stripes. The orange "sunburst" patterns on the white umbrellas at lower right are free-form applications. The original, of course, was much smaller than the enlargement here. Imagine the amount of time it must have taken to make just this one image for a customer who had ordered perhaps another 100 or so to go with it. Whether or not the style and artistry of Enami's photographs appeal to us, the studio colorists under his guidance are certainly to be commended with respect for their patient labors that produced the world of delicate and natural tint seen throughout the body of Enami's work.
