Best remembered for a series of over 400 portraits he took of The Countess da Castiglione (1837-1899). The Italian Countess da Castiglione was seemingly obsessed by her own beauty and during three periods of her life (1856-1857, 1861-1867 and 1893-1895) she was intensively photographed by Pierson in a wide variety of costumes from the finest Parisian couture houses of Worth and Pingat. Some of the photographs were hand-painted creating fanciful renditions of her as "Ermitage de Passy" [The Hermit of Passy] (1863) or "La Reine d'Etrurie" [The Queen of Etruria] (1863-1867).
