Anton Seidl
(7 May, 1850 - 28 March, 1898)
Hungarian Conductor

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Seidl entered the Leipzig Conservatory in October, 1870 at age twenty. He was already considered proficient in most of the orchestral instruments, but also had knowledge of music theory. His strong desire following two years study at Leipzig was for conducting. Returning to Budapest, during the summer of 1872, Seidl worked with Hans Richter the conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra (1871-1875). Richter recommended Seidl to work with Richard Wagner as a copyist at Bayreuth. There he assisted in making the first performance copy of "Der Ring des Nibelungen." Seidl took part in the first Bayreuth Festival in 1876. His first chance as a conductor came in 1879, with Wagner's recommendation he was appointed to the Leipzig State Theater. Seidl joined the touring company of Angelo Neumann's Nibelungen Ring Company in 1882, and gained notoriety in performances of Wagner opera Trilogy at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. In 1883, following performance with the touring company he remained in Bremen to become the conductor of the Bremen Opera Theatre. Two years later (1885) he was appointed the successor to Leopold Damrosch as conductor of the German Opera Company in New York. He married opera contralto, Auguste Kraus in that same year. In 1891, he accepted the position as conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Seidl died at 10:15 p.m. on 28 March, 1898, from food poisoning at the home of his business manager, Mr. Bernstein, having gone there after eating fish at the Vienna Cafe earlier in the day. His wife was summoned to his bedside before his passing.

Maskell (Born about 1857) was a founder member of the British Linked Ring and a photographer. Writing to Henry Peach Robinson on April 24, 1892, Maskell proposed a revolutionary new photographic organization that became known as the Linked Ring: "Now it has struck me that it would be good…(to) form a small society, an inner circle, a kind of little Bohemian Club, and I am sending this idea to a small number of others in order that we might meet and make a beginning."

Maskell was both a champion and pioneer for unconventional photographic processes including pinhole photography and the gum bichromate process. This photogravure of a young Dutch girl was taken using a pinhole camera by Maskell. An article titled "Artistic Focus and the Suppression of the Lens" which deals with photography without the aid of a lens, ("pinhole photography") was published in the Photographic Quarterly, Vol. II, No. 5. from October 1890. It can be accessed as a pdf document from the historical documents menu at the website for Nick Dvoracek Pinhole Photography: http://idea.uwosh.edu/nick/pinholephoto.htm

Skulls from the Philippines and Mariannes (detail)

Lithograph, detail
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs - Auction (Skylight Gallery Catalog 28,April 30, 2009, #9)

Large lithographic plate reproducing six daguerreotypes by Louis-Auguste Bisson ca. 1841 of skulls from natives of the Philippines and Mariannes islands. Mounted on sheet 13 x 19.5 inches (33x50cm) . Print size 11.75 x 16 inches (30x41 cm).

From the rare illustrative supplement to Dumont D'Urville, "Voyage au P¶le Sud et dans l'Océanie…" (1842-7). The subjects are identified in the image as "Femme / Femme / Femme / D'un Ossuaire moderne de Zambouagan, Ile Mindanao, Archipel des Philippines (Micronesie) / D'un Ossuaire moderne de Zambouangan, Ile Mindanao, Archipel des Philippines (Malaisie) / D'un Ossuaire Chamoro, District d'Agat, Ile Guabam, Archipel des Mariannes (Malaisie)."

Produced at the very dawn of the photographic era, these daguerreian lithographs are one of the earliest uses of photography as a scientific mirror of the external world. Their meticulous detail and strong three-dimensionality recreates the impression of the original daguerreotype plates. Some of Bisson's original daguerreotypes from the project survive in museums, and two (of skulls) are illustrated in "Le daguerréotype franþais: Un objet photographique" (2003), pp. 369-370. Charles I. Berg (sic: listed as C. J. Berg on photogravure and on plate list) (New York)

Berg (1856-1926.) studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and London and began a practice as an architect in New York City in 1880. In 1897, the Gillender Building, which he designed, was completed. The Gillender, demolished in 1910, was one of New York City's earliest skyscrapers at twenty-stories. In 1896, he became a founding member of the Camera Club of New York and its first print committee chairman. Berg's photographs frequently pictured classically draped models surrounded with architectural elements. (Peterson, Christian A. Alfred Stieglitz's Camera Notes The Minneapolis Institute of Arts in association with W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1993, p.159)

This rather "straight" photograph is reminiscent of studies done by Stieglitz of his wife Georgia O'Keefe. A fascinating variant of this image was published in The Photographic Times in 1897 titled "Adoration". This version can be seen at www.photogravure.com.
