Mascher Stereo Daguerreotype of a woman

The interior of the case is marked "Maschers Improved Stereoscope - Patent Applied For". This would suggest a very early stereoscopic image, possibly prior to the date of the patent March 8, 1853. Most Mascher cases are marked with this date.

Refer Wing pages 80/81 for more information on Mascher cases.

John F. Mascher patented this ingenious case in 1853. The dual image, captured stereoscopically, can be viewed in three dimensions with a pair of lenses that fold out from the viewing case.

Quarter plate Mascher Stereo Daguerreotype by W. L German, Philadelphia.

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Stereographica - Antique Photographica
Courtesy of Bryan and Page Ginns (#16/85)

This is quite a rare image in that there are two stereo images on one plate. Mascher stereo Daguerreotypes are usually two separate sixth plate images transposed to form a three dimensional image. The two images on one plate would suggest this image was taken with some kind of Daguerreotype camera with a mirror or prism to transpose the image into a stereo pair.

Luxurious French stereoscopic daguerreotype with hand coloring, sparkling jewels on the woman's bracelet and necklace. The stereo effect is very well realized. This chair and curtain appear in other images in this genre. A variant is in "Die Erotische Daguerreotypie; Sammlung Uwe Scheid" p. 79, bottom. A stereoscopic daguerreotype with this chair is attributed to Alexis Gouin/Braquehais in Janet Buerger, "French Daguerreotypes," No. 214.
