| 33. |  | Esaki Reiji Studio 1870s (ca) Geisha Albumen print 278 x 213mm Old Japan Images and text courtesy of Terry Bennett (Old Japan - www.old-japan.co.uk - 1015124) This is an extremely rare portrait coming, as it does, from the studio of Esaki Reiji (1845-1910).In 1871 Esaki opened his first studio in Shiba, Tokyo. Within a few years he became one of the best known photographers in Tokyo. Esaki is credited with being the first Japanese to employ dry-plate technology and became the first to photograph a moving object; the subject was the funeral procession of Iwakura Tomomi in July 1883. This photograph has the Esaki studio name blind-stamped in Chinese characters on the bottom left-hand corner of the image. Photographs by Esaki are exceptionally rare. |

Paul Frecker Paul Frecker provides the following comments: "The Araucanian Indians are an indigenous people of South America who occupied most of central Chile at the time of the Spanish conquest. An agricultural people living in small settlements, they are classified into three main cultural subdivisions, the Huilliche, the Picunche, and the Mapuche, the last being the largest group. Currently all Araucanians call themselves Mapuche. Two Araucanian languages are still spoken, of which Mapudungun is the most common. It is also known as Mapudungu, Araucano and Mapuche. It has about 440,000 speakers, with about 400,000 in Chile and another 40,000 in Argentina. About 200,000 people use the language regularly." A pencilled inscription in a period hand on the back of the print reads Interior de una chasa [sic] tejenda [Interior of a weaver's house].
