King of Clubs

Carte de visite
Creative Commons - Wikipedia
A carte de visite of Sim D. Kehoe, who helped bring Indian-club exercising to the United States. Store web page states: "In 1861, Sim. D. Kehoe, an American fitness enthusiast and businessman, traveled to England where he observed the art of Indian-club swinging. Believing he had found the perfect exercise apparatus, he began to manufacture and sell clubs to the American public in 1862. This is a fascinating image! In the center is Simon Kehoe, "King of Clubs." On top are photos of people who use the clubs (one looks like General McClellan), as well as a list of people to the left, which includes J.C. Heenan, Joe Coburn, Frank Queen, Con Fitzgerald, Sandy Spencer, Charles Pierce, Professor Dermody, Harry Hill, Joe Foote or Foore, James Hamill, Josh Ward, etc. To the right, it gives other that use the clubs: Dudley Kavanagh, Ed Russell, and Neil Bryant. The photo states that these War clubs & dumbells are the best medicine in the world. Interesting caricature! Photographer backmark imprint: C.D. Fredrick's, New York."

Advertisement for Alphonse

Albumen print, embedded on a journal page
3.25 x 2.5 ins (83 x 64 mm)

Charles Schwartz Ltd
This rare and striking advertisement gives us what may be one of earliest--and most unique--uses of photography in a commercial setting: a page from a journal made by mechanical reproduction (complete with illustrations drawn from engravings), in which an advertiser has embedded an actual, carte-de-visite-sized, albumen print. Readers would not only have a sense of one-to-one scale from this image, but they would also experience, first-hand, the difference in type between the sepia-toned likeness they might commission from the photographer, vs. the broadside-like, b & w engravings pictured above--and with which they'd be most familiar. A fascinating document (of interest to both enthusiasts of early photography, and print media) of the meeting of nascent and existing technologies. In brief translation, the Photographer, one "Alphonse" of Number 28 Rue du Faubourg-St.-Honoré boasts his diverse offerings to the potential client: studio props (paintings, machines, furniture, statues and other objects d'art); his ability to teach any amateur the collodion process; his ability to speak foreign languages, et al. Alphonse keeps studio hours of 10AM-5PM, every day of the week. (Charles Schwartz)

Stock id: #24934

First German edition. Large square quarto. [26],179pp. Black cloth with signature of artist stamped in white on front cover in original photographic dust jacket. Photographic endpapers. Fascinating pictorial account of Dutch photographer Ed Van der Elsken's 1960 trip to Asia and North America. The work is profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of photographs focusing on the daily life of people in these countries. The artist succeeds in capturing the joy, as well as the hardship of its inhabitants. The work was published worldwide in 7 editions. "Van der Elsken hat weder sogenannte Sehenswürdigkeiten noch Landschaften fotografiert; das überläßt er anderen. Sie tauchen zwar in seinen Fotos auch auf, aber das Hauptaugenmerk des Fotografen wie seiner Kamera galt immer dem Menschen, seinem Leiden und Glück, der Vielfalt des Lebens, das er voll Verständnis und Teilnahme und gerade deshalb aufrichtig und ehrlich bis zur Brutalität notierte." Text in German.

"Sweet Life is a sprawling, exuberant cornucopia, a preview of the pure stream-of-consciousness, machine-gun approach that would soon come with the Japanese Provoke photographers. And like the Provoke aesthetic, Van der Elsken's work has its dark and pessimistic undertones, although in Sweet Life bold, frantic energies predominate." (Parr/Badger, vol. I, p.255).

Paul Outerbridge Jr.'s infallible eye for beauty and form made him an ideal advertising photographer. With an innate understanding of the relationship between glamour and pleasure, Outerbridge studied the formal aspects of the objects he photographed and transformed them, subverting familiar articles into modernist abstractions. Nowhere is that talent more evident than in the advertisement for Marmon automobiles offered here. This juxtaposition of bold silhouette and finely rendered detail conveys confidence, modernity, and power. In a seemingly simple composition, Outerbridge creates a narrative of historic tradition as well as forward-thinking technology for the high-end consumer.

Though he is now known for spectacular experiments with color photography, Outerbridge had achieved fame as a commercial photographer by the early 1920s. His rise to prominence came astonishingly quickly. In 1921 he enrolled in Clarence White's School of Photography and by the next year was published in Vogue magazine. (This was his well-known "Ide Collar," which transformed common perceptions of advertising and even attracted the interest of Marcel Duchamp).

Outerbridge believed that photography best exemplified the modern age and temperament. He created compositions that championed the purity of form, spatial arrangement and post-WWI modernist aesthetics. A highly skilled photographer, Outerbridge made preliminary drawings for many of his compositions and insisted on using platinum paper--a luxury good during the wartime era--because of the rich tonal quality it gave his negatives.

Founded in 1902 by Howard Marmon, Marmon Motor Car Company quickly became successful in the early days of the automobile industry. The cars were characterized by ambitious mechanical engineering and stylish design. The Marmon Wasp won the Indianapolis 500 in 1911 (with the first rear view mirror), and, in 1916, a team of drivers in the Marmon 34 broke the transcontinental record by driving cross-country in less than 6 days. Only in business until 1933, Marmon cars were produced in relatively small quantities and are now prized by collectors.
