The 'platonic erotomaniac' placed Woman beyond Blumenfeld's reach. From the depth of his childhood memories he remembered his first love paroxysms when he discovered women painted by Cranach, 'their insolent beauty all the more naked for their transparent veils…there was born in me the desire to see through the transparency.' Dache (1898-1989) was known for her flamboyant style, and modeled close-fitting brimmed cloche hats, snoods, caps and draped turbans. She also designed hats for movies, including stars Betty Grable and Marlene Dietrich. This image graced the cover of Life magazine at the peak of Dache's popularity. |
