Memories of Happy Times

Ambrotype, 1/6 plate, cased
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs
Courtesy of Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs (Skylight Gallery Catalog 27, October, 23, 2008 #27)

A thoughtful woman playing guitar, with a small cased image of another woman resting in a cloth on her knee. Touches of gilt applied to the highlights of her jewelry. Housed in a full case.

A fascinating image which makes us wonder as to the relation between the guitar-strumming sitter and the friend whose image she holds. (While the small image cannot be easily made out, on close examination it does seem to reveal the outline of a typical 19th-century woman's hairstyle.) Perhaps she remembers the songs they sang together while accompanied by the guitar.

Aesthetic exploration of the guitar appears throughout the history of 20th-century art, particularly in Cubism. Picasso, for example, painted (and sculpted) this everyday musical instrument from 1913 through 1924, each time deepening his interpretation of the shallow and ambiguous painterly space.

Tabard''s interpretation of the guitarist is no less ambitious in its execution. He combines both the technique of solarization and exploration of positive/negative space as the language of his image. In much the same way Picasso''s Cubist paintings deconstructed picture planes to create a new sense of time and space, Tabard''s photograph is a visual puzzle. Although the subject''s patterned jacket is rendered in the reverse tones of a negative. The solarization effect appears to be highlighted in the man''s fingers and face, which are rendered in a distinct tonality. Tabard returned to the theme again in "Composition aux guitares" (1929), a less elaborate construction.

Kerchief at his neck. He seems to be actually playing. Taken from a low angle so we have the unexpected pleasure of seeing his shoe and sock and up into the pants leg of the leg draped over the other knee. He must have been making this foot active while playing, generating the idea for taking the portrait from that angle.

Perhaps the signature image from "The Family of Man" exhibition, which was organized by Edward Steichen, then director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, in 1955. The picture appeared on the cover of MoMA's book, and was used extensively in magazines and newspapers across the country, including Ziff Davis's own "Popular Photography."

This pioneering exhibition offered infinitely diverse images of human beings living in the 1950s, emphatically reminding viewers that they all belonged to the same big family. Now regarded as the 'greatest photographic enterprise ever undertaken,' the exhibition consisted of 503 photographs taken by 273 photographers, both professional and amateur, famous and unknown, from 68 countries. A huge undertaking, with unique cultural and artistic dimensions, "The Family of Man" stirred public interest in photography and its tremendous ability to communicate.
Common biographical error: It is often stated Eurgene V. Harris died with Werner Bischof in a car accident in Peru on 16th May 1854 but this is incorrect. According to the mining company's report of 25th May 1954 the people in the car were Ali de Szepessy-Schaurek, Luis Delgado and A. W. Bischof. (pers. email, Paul Stachelek, 1 February 2014)

The miners needed entertainment. Here are three who supplied it, seated with their legs crossed. They wear the typical miners' red shirts and straw hats, and so are more likely to have been miners who played for their fellows than musicians who came primarily as entertainers. The accordion player and Mr. Tambourine Man in the center smoke cigars, but not the fiddler at right.

This 1/6 plate is still in its original seals. The embossed logo for "R. H. Vance's Premium Daguerrean Galleries, San Francisco, Sacramento and Marysville" is on the purple velvet pad of the case. There is some dust on the underside of the glass, but no damage to the plate.

Landowska, born in Poland in 1879, was a major artist who popularized the harpsichord (she used a larger instrument than was later to become more standard) and scholar of early music. Her presentations of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" (she made the first recording) were extremely influential. Before WWII she lived and taught in Paris, and frequented the lesbian-oriented artistic salon of Natalie Clifford Barney. During the Nazi period she emigrated to the US where she widely performed and taught, until her death in 1959. This is a private collection of material belonging to one of her protégés, with several endorsed to "Kati" in the 1950's (one by Denise Restout, Landowska's disciple and companion.).There are 9 photographs of W.L. at her instrument (2 with damage). 3 other portraits, 7 personal snapshots and a small album with 15 snapshots, most in color. In addition there are 7 early postcards from France and Russia with photographic images, drawings and a silhouette. Aside from the few damaged ones, most are [3] to [4-].

In addition, the collection also contains 5 photographs of pianists. 3 are of Felicia Blumenthal, another Polish emigré who was in the circle of W.L. in New York. She died in 1991. These are from the 1980's. One, by Bruno of Hollywood, has an elaborate endorsement, plus one of her daughter with Arthur Rubenstein. Final portrait is of Josef and Rosina Lhevinne.
