Dreams of Childhood Tintype Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs Courtesy of Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs (Skylight Gallery Catalog 27, October, 23, 2008 #39) A young girl riding a mock studio horse in front of an elaborate painted backdrop, with a mock studio lawn beneath the hooves of the stead. The horse in this image is of a strange composition that emphasizes its imaginary nature. The stead's head, for example, seems to be a different color and construction than the body, almost as if the head were part of the painted backdrop. Its front legs are lifted as if in a suspended gallop, a pose which also recalls that of the horses on a merry-go-round. Overall the effect of these elements is to create a dreamlike tableau, rather like paintings of Marc Chagall. |

57. | ![]() | H. Rocher n.d. Clara Louise Kellogg, American Soprano (1842-1916) Private collection of T. Max Hochstetler Clara Louise Kellogg was born in 1842 at Sumterville, South Carolina, but her childhood was spent in the North. Her parents was inventor, George Kellogg, and her mother was an excellent musician. It is said that Clara could hum a tune correctly at age nine months. When she was fourteen her parent moved to New York for Clara to begin musical studies. Kellogg made her debut at the New York Academy of Music on 27 February, 1861 as Gilda in "Rigoletto." She also was the first to perform Marguerite in Gounod's "Faust," a role which few have equaled. She debuted in London on 2 November 1867 as Marguerite at Her Majesty's Theatre. She also was honored to be invited to sing at the Handel Festival at Crystal Palace. Kellogg had gained enthusiastic fans both in America and England. In 1872 she joined with Austrian Pauline Lucca and formed a touring company known as The English Opera Company, believing American audiences would enjoy the German and Italian operas performed in English. After numerous years of success touring America, she accepted an engagement in Austria where she sang in Italian with a German opera company. She also performed on the stages at St. Petersburg. Clara Kellogg married impressario Carl Strakosch who served as her agent and shortly after retired. She was quite wealthy by the end of her career and spent much time on philanthropic enterprises. She died at her home in New Haven, Connecticut on 13 May 1916. (Kindly contributed by T. Max Hochstetler, June 2007) |

Of these, two show the painter in the process of painting a portrait of Silvy; in the first, he has just started the portrait, and in the second, the portrait, which shows Silvy at half-length against a plain, dark background, holding a pair of white gloves, is almost finished. The painted flat in this portrait, which depicts a ship's deck, appears rarely in the Silvy daybooks, in all less than fifteen times, and with only one other exception, the sitter is always a naval officer or naval cadet. |

Henry Wagar Halleck Carte de visite Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 16) Halleck was a tactical theorist and often effective administrator. After the Mexican War he had various important posts in early California. During the Civil War he advanced to General in Chief, but he proved not so brilliant in the field and his administrative rigor was only partly successful, so in 1864 he was replaced by Grant, and appointed Chief of Staff. Portraits of him are fairly common, but this one is rare and interesting. He is shown in full uniform with sword. His gloved hand rests on a scroll and there is an eagle statue above it. The flag backdrop is unusual. The face has been retouched. |

140. | ![]() | Thomas Le Clear 1865 (ca) Interior with Portraits Oil on canvas 25 7/8 x 40 1/2 ins (65.7 x 102.9 cm) American Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution Museum purchase made possible by the Pauline Edwards Bequest (1993.6) This painting was included in the "American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765-1915" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (October 12, 2009 - January 24, 2010). The online notes for the exhibition described this painting in the following way. By about 1865 American artists were beginning to understand the implications of photography for the art of painting. This canvas reportedly was commissioned by the elder brother of the two children James and Parnell Sidway posing in the skylit studio. The paraphernalia of painting are upstaged by the photographer and his gear and the landscape is a mere prop, not an awe-inspiring view. Yet Le Clear does not simply tell a story of photography's triumph over painting. At the time the painting was made, James Sidway, a volunteer firefighter in his mid-twenties, had recently died in a hotel fire; his older sister, Parnell, had died in adolescence, more than fifteen years earlier. Thus, Le Clear may be lauding painters who, unlike photographers, could capture more than the moment at hand, invent narrative, and even restore life to individuals who had passed. |
