Was a passenger onboard the "Pilot" in the Pacific in 1869 and became Captain of the same vessel in 1870 trading in that region. In March 1970 he was shipwrecked at Yandee, New Caledonia, and that may have encouraged him to take up a new career. In 1871 he started a business as a photographer in Noumea and he documented several government expeditions - the prison on the Ile of the Pines for Communards, the political prisoners who were deported after the Revolution of 1871 in France, (November 1872) and the interior of New Caledonia (1874). Examples of his photographs of the Communards are in the State Library of New South Wales. He was active in New Caledonia until his death in 1883.
Cambridge University Library has some examples of his work in the Royal Commonwealth Society collection. The State Library of New South Wales, Australia, has 140 of his original glass plate negatives.
