A main event at the Ryounkaku in July 1891, the exhibition comprised one hundred portraits of geisha from the major pleasure quarters of Tokyo, including Shimbashi and Yoshiwara, and visitors were invited to vote on their particular favourite, with prizes being awarded to the five most popular girls. The winner was the 19-year old O-Tama who attracted the patronage of an anonymous admirer who paid for her release from the Tamagawaya Geisha house in Shimbashi. |

Within a few years he became one of the best known photographers in Tokyo. Esaki is credited with being the first Japanese to employ dry-plate technology and became the first to photograph a moving object; the subject was the funeral procession of Iwakura Tomomi in July 1883. This photograph has the Esaki studio name blind-stamped in Chinese characters on the bottom left-hand corner of the image. Photographs by Esaki are exceptionally rare. |

60. | ![]() | T. Enami 1892-1895 (ca) Priests with their umbrella-man Lantern slide Private collection of Rob Oechsle This early exterior study is one of over twenty T. Enami images used by Burton Holmes to illustrate the Japan portion of his best-selling, multi-volume Travelogue series. The early book sets, first published in 1901, were careful to credit all photographers whose images filled the pages; however, this one slipped by without credit. For Holmes' book, the plate-makers removed all background material in the image, leaving only the four figures with their umbrella. Such image manipulation was common in a era where the old artists and engravers were being called on to prepare half-tone plates from photographs. (Such an image appearing as a "wood engraving" would also most likely have little or no background). After many years, the Travelogue publisher erased all photographer credit lines from beneath the images. This eventually led some later publications that used the Burton Holmes Collection to erroneously attribute to Holmes the work of many Japanese (and some American) photographers. Holmes biographer, Genoa Caldwell, has done much to correct these errors of attribution. |

Japanese Ambassadors to Europe. Annoyed that the first mission in 1860 had gone to the United States, the British and French ministers to Japan, Alcock and de Bellecourt respectively, persuaded the Tokugawa government of the importance of visiting Europe. Without any real enthusiasm for the idea, the government nominated a team of thirty-six six of whom had been on the earlier American mission. Passing through Hong Kong on their way to Europe, two senior members of the delegation, Matsudaira Yasunao and Kyogoku Takaaki, were photographed at Miller's studio. Milton Miller is rightly acclaimed as one of the greatest portrait photographers of nineteenth-century Asia, and this is a particularly fine example of his handiwork. |

Clutterbuck was a wealthy amateur photographer, plant-collector and traveller. He also authored several books on travel. The only other known example of this image is in a smaller format (83x65mm approx.) and held by the Okinawa Prefectural Museum. Clutterbuck was influenced by Robert Demachy and his work featured in many exhibitions. |

Hand colouring of photographs with water colours had been common in Japan from the 1860s. But in the late 1870s the well-known photographer, Yokoyama Matsusaburo, started experimenting with a number of printing techniques and also developed a form of photographic oil painting (shashin abura-e). This involved peeling off the emulsion covering the face of a photograph and then painting the rear side with oil paints. One of his students, Azukizawa Ryoichi, developed and patented his own technique and described himself as a "Patent Oil-Painter on Photograph and Lithograph, and Common Oil-Painter and Photographer." In 1885 he was granted a fifteen-year patent and he applied this strange technique to the standard photographs of views and costumes usually found in souvenir albums. A number of Meiji-era photographers seem to have experimented with similar methods and with mixed results. Of the examples seen, it is difficult to tell whether the pictures are photographs or paintings. |

But, from a Japanese perspective, it was exotic English, and used for a proprietary line of over 1,600 stereoview titles published sometime during the years 1905-12. Connected with KINKODO publishers of Yokohama, the series seems to be the work of many contributing photographers --- including what appear to be some variant views from T. ENAMI --- who all had their work processed and mounted by one studio. |

106. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer / artist 1877, October The Far East Fortnightly journal Old Japan Images and text courtesy of Terry Bennett (Old Japan - www.old-japan.co.uk - EB-30028) The Far East was initially a fortnightly journal published in Yokohama, Japan by John R. Black 1870-75. The journal was a newspaper covering events mainly in Japan but also in other countries in the Far East. Importantly it was illustrated with actual photographs which were tipped in to each issue. Although the occasional volume has appeared at auction it remains an exceptionally rare work. Only two or three complete runs of the first series are known to exist. One regrettable reason is that when issues or the odd volume appears the rare photographs are sometimes removed and sold separately. After a short break, Black commenced a second series in July 1876 and the journal was then published monthly. It ran until December 1878. The second series was published in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong and had a much greater focus on China and appears to be even rarer than the first series. This October 1877 issue is contained in its original yellow wrappers measuring 270 x 215mm. The covers contain printed advertisements from the photo studios of
