"I believe that there are few photographs which have been published as many times as this plant in the White Sands desert in New Mexico! Whoever it was that selected the picture must have been moved by its symbolism the struggle for survival. I took the photograph during a period of great personal loneliness, and this inner loneliness became a stark outward reality when, after hours of walking in the desert, I found myself lost in this limitless space. By re-tracing my footsteps, I managed to regain sight of my car in the far, far distance. The creation of the picture had so captivated me that I had lost count of time and distance."

When I photographed the Hawaiian Islands after the war, I was happy to find there was still a great deal of native tradition and folklore. My book Hawaii immortalizes some of the islands' wonderful but vanishing native people , and my friend Stanley Stubenberg, who was born in Hawaii, knew nothing of this book before we met and told me of the impact my pictures had made. This fisherman, photographed on the coast of Oahu, was throwing his net for the daily catch a beautiful image of strength and motion accompanied by the thunder of the Hawaiian surf."

"In all art studies, the rendition of the human figure has an important place. To master this medium photographically is extremely difficult, and one of the great challenges to the photographer. In Marguerite I found an exquisite model, and she became the subject of my book Figure Studies. One day we sailed past these huge granite blocks on a little Caribbean island, and it was then that I perceived the beautiful inter-relationship between the soft outline of the human body and the crude and fantastically shaped rocks."

"Nieves, a Mexican-Indian beauty, was the subject of the cover of my book Mexico, and this picture was the favourite among the collection which I did for Alexei Brodovitch in the special edition of Harpers Bazaar.

Nieves, a model used by the famous painters Diego Rivera and Orozco, had great poise and presence while at the same time being shy and seemingly unaware of the fascination which she radiated. How to capture this in a photograph? Her own intuition helped create this picture of her playfully hiding behind a banana leaf in the garden of her home in Cuernavaca."

"I have always been intensely interested in human beings, and in many of my pictures I depict them in close relationship to their surroundings. At the time when I was documenting a number of Western European countries, one of the most fascinating regions was the Ruhr district in Germany. An accident had recently taken place in a mine, and permission to go underground was refused; when I entered a dimly lit room near the top of a pit, however, I met this miner who had just come up from the bottom of the pit. He seemed completely exhausted, and he paid very little attention to my camera (which was handheld).

I very rarely use a tripod, since it cuts down on mobility, and prefer the spontaneous approach in which a fraction of a second frequently makes the picture."

"When I received the assignment to photograph Paris, I was fortunate enough to have no preconceived ideas. Atget's work was not known at the times, and it was only in later years that I realized how closely some of my impressions approached his images. This picture of the god and the woman in the Jardin du Louvre is unposed, and I came upon it while walking in garden."

"A photographer's life is frequently something like a story book. When United Airlines assigned me to create a collection of pictures for them in Hawaii, I had no idea that this would prove to be the first step towards an assignment for the Oil Industry. I reflected on the best way to handle such contrasts, and I came up with a solution which delighted my client: I decided to humanize the theme. A drilling rig is in itself of little human interest, and I hit upon the notion of establishing the location and dramatizing the image by using the human element. This is one of the few photographs for which I used 1/500th sec., the fastest shutter speed on my Rolleiflex."
