Auction Preview: Be-Hold 52 (October 30, 2008)
Title Introduction Carousel Lightbox Checklist

1.John Plumbe Jr.
n.d.
Parents, Babies

Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 1)

In a stippled octagonal mat stamped "Plumbe" in lower left. The wistful mother holds a baby in her lap. Her fingers extend from the half glove that covers her wrist. The baby, with eyes closed, mouth open sleeping? or is this a post mortem? The man holds a baby very much alive. Her head has moved and she holds father's hand. As often with Plumbe the image is carefully composed within the frame of the octagonal mat. The geometry of the mat is enforced by the vertical border passing through the center of the mother's hair and body that separates the plain dark background (typical of Plumbe) behind the father from the light area at the right of the scene. The plate is in a nice typical Plumbe "vase of flowers" case with violet silk pad on the separated cover. It has been resealed. There are some minor abrasions just above the left vertical of the mat.

Charming Twins

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 7)

Their arms are linked, creating an interesting pattern where their plaid sleeves cross. They have lace collars and pantaloons. The one at the right holds a straw hat. This + plate daguerreotype is sealed in a European passe-partout. There are some very light wipes, mostly to the right of the right boy's face. Some imperfections on the underside of the glass CAN be cleaned; they are not on the plate.

Model of a Civil War Ship

Tintype, 1/6 plate
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 10)

Elaborate detail of the rigging, the gun ports, the armored turrets on deck. This looks like an ironclad ram, and perhaps the very one can be identified. 1/6 plate TINTYPE in a nice thermoplastic frame with one repaired crack. There is a small rub to the left of the ship, and a few minor marks.

James Topham Brady

Carte de visite
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 15)

This is James Topham Brady in a CDV by Mathew Brady. J.T. Brady was a brilliant attorney, District Attorney of New York City. He was an innovator in the use of the defense of temporary insanity. As defense attorney he won 51 out of 52 murder trials. He also wrote literary pieces under the name "Query." There is a pinhole on the top of the mount, with light scratch beneath it.

Henry Wagar Halleck

Carte de visite
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 16)

Halleck was a tactical theorist and often effective administrator. After the Mexican War he had various important posts in early California. During the Civil War he advanced to General in Chief, but he proved not so brilliant in the field and his administrative rigor was only partly successful, so in 1864 he was replaced by Grant, and appointed Chief of Staff. Portraits of him are fairly common, but this one is rare and interesting. He is shown in full uniform with sword. His gloved hand rests on a scroll and there is an eagle statue above it. The flag backdrop is unusual. The face has been retouched.

Good Bear, Pawnee

Carte de visite
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 19)

CDV with Jackson Bros. "Photograph of Indians" Omaha backstamp. "Sioux" in pencil on verso, but the correct identification is supplied by a print in the National Anthropological Archives (Information here and in other Indian lots thanks to Mike Cowdrey.) Seated in his buffalo robe, he holds a pine branch. Cowdrey notes the rare feature of the white turkey feathers with black bars worn in his hair. This exotic Eastern bird (not officially recognized until 1971) had probably been brought by a New England family following the Oregon Trail. The print is clean with no damage, but slightly light.

Black Foot, Pawnee

Carte de visite
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc

CDV with Jackson Brothers Omaha, Nebraska backstamp, and signed in the negative. The man in his buffalo robe demonstrates the method of holding the bow with a spare arrow that was extremely effective. He's identified in pencil on the bottom of the mount, and again on the verso, though there his name is given incorrectly as "Black Food."

[Crossing the Plains to Montana with Captain Fisk's Expedition, 1866]

Stereocard
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 25)

Title and imprint on the mount, with No. "245" in the negative. This photograph was actually by Illingworth and Bill, who sold the negatives to Carbutt. George Bill had been Carbutt's assistant and seems to have been Illingworth's. In this view we can just see, in the lower left, Bill's photograph box, mostly cropped out by Carbutt to disguise the origin. In the background we can see the protective circle of wagons, but there are tents pitched in front.

These are "Skin of the Heart" (Pericardium), "Afraid of the Bear" and "Red Lodge." There are many interesting details. Small imprinted Hamilton & Hoyt label is on the verso of this mustard/white mount.

A Family of Sheepeater Bannocks
[Hayden Survey]

Cabinet card
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 33)

On a Hayden Survey mount. The parents and 5 children pose sullenly at the mouth of their wickiup-- canvas supported by a frame of bent saplings. They have sorrowful expressions. This was photographed on the Snake River plateau in Idaho. Slight soil. This view, taken June 11, 1871, is illustrated in Fleming & Luskey, The North American Indians in Early Photographs p. 122. There Jackson is quoted as saying the family was shy, but "a handful of sugar and some coffee reconciled them to having their picture taken." Seven years later most Bannocks were taken prisoner.

12.Erwin
1897
Geronimo, Chief of the notorious Band of Arizona Apaches

Gelatin silver print, hand-tinted
10 x 8 in

Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 44)

This is one of the great portraits of Geronimo, titled in the print "Chief of the notorious Band of Arizona Apaches/ Photo by Erwin 1897." This shows his bellicose side, as he holds the pistol in his cartridge belt. It is a strong artistic portrait, especially as attractively colored like this, with the shadow of his horned headpiece on the haystack behind.

This came down from Erwin's family. A pen inscription on verso reads: "W. E. Erwin was Joyce Estes Allen's great uncleà. " And then, in another hand: "W. E. Erwin paid $20.00 in Gold to take this picture on the Reservation in Okla. All Apaches believed when a picture faded they would die so at that time it was quite a featà."

He wears a Peace Medal with the profile of President Benjamin Harrison that echoes the magnificent profile of this portrait. The artist Leonard Baskin made a print based in this photograph.

Albumen print

Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 51)

Mount by Taber, San Francisco. This differs from typical Taber photographs as there is not an imprinted number and title in the print. The title is written in period pen on the bottom of the mount, suggesting that this was a special edition. This is a wide view showing the ships at the right and left, and the huge crowd of newly arrived Chinese with their belongings on the dock. They face the bay, away from the camera. This rare historic view must have been taken before 1882, when the Chinese Exclusion Act suppressed Chinese immigration to the U.S.

The "Lucia"

Cyanotype

Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc

From the celebrated 1891 album of Bosse's views along the Upper Mississippi. This little steamer was named for the daughter of Alexander Mackenzie, of the Army Corps of Engineers, who supervised Bosse's survey. She is seen moored at Frederick, Maryland. This is more a study of the vessel than of the river landscape.

Voiture Gazeuse

Albumen print
8 ¢ x 7 in

Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc

With title and number "30" in pencil in Atget's hand on verso. This appeared in the album "La Voiture a Paris" [Sally Nesbitt, "Atget's Seven Albums," p. 357.] The wagon delivered cases of bottled seltzer. " A florid "No. 1" is on the side of the cab. This is a wonderful example of Atget recording something that was rapidly being replaced by modern transit.

River landscape

Oil print
11 ¢ x 15 7/16 in

Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 70

Some pencil notations on the verso in Misonne's hand, and pencil notation by his grandson certifying the authenticity [this is typical of the vintage Misonne prints that become available in recent years.]

Misonne's photographs are always subtle and never dramatic. Those with lonely figures and other romantic details are more popular, but these exquisite subtle pure landscapes are the essence of his artistry, and reward sustained and repeated viewing. The tones move from darker greens in the lower right towards even more delicate tones in the back and across the river.

Gelatin silver print

Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (52 / 72

With various stamps and notations on the verso. One stamp is for the Folkwang-Auriga Verlag, of which Renger was the director of photography in this period. A pen inscription ascribes this to the book by the botanist Walther Haage, "Die Welt der Pflanze," published by Folkwang in 1930. The latin name of the plant is given in pencil. One of Haage's specialties was cacti. A slight variant of the photograph, with Renger-Patzsch ink stamp, was offered in the F. Tajan auction on 11/22/05, Lot 32.

This is a striking, stark frontal photograph of the plant, with little indication of scale or context, a classic example of "Neue Sachlichkeit." Just slight sense of handling but no bends or tears.
