Auction Preview: Be-Hold 51 Part 1 (Feb 21, 2008)

Early scholarly gentleman

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim (Auction: Feb 21, 2008, 51, part 1 / lot 1)

In a square gold paper mat, in a case with decorated border, ruled lines, flowers in the inner corners, rose silk pad. This is ca. 1843. The gentleman appears full of thought, with his hand supporting his head. The other hand is also fully shown, touching a volume of "UNIVERSAL HISTORY" on the table. His dress is somewhat archaic. The right side of the composition is busy with the hands, arm, table and the studio tassels, while the upper left has only a plain background. The horizontal line to the left of his neck is actually in the scene. I've seen this arrangements of tassels before, but I can't place the studio. This came from and old Baltimore estate.

The gold-toned plate is in a mat with embossed "Beard Patentee," in the original early Wharton frame, within a deep Morocco fliptop case. See the excellent article by Dr. Robert Fisher in "The Daguerreian Annual 1992" on Beard's operations in England in the 1840's, including his franchise of the Wolcott-Johnson mirror camera and other technical innovations. Beard had the technical cooperation of Wolcott, Johnson and Goddard, and employed as operators great daguerreotypists such as Jabez Hogg and T. R. Williams. Many of the early portraits were of figures connected with early photography, but I haven't identified this subject.

She is anchored in a harbor with mountains in the left background, some building on the nearer hills. Possibly the location can be identified. Sailors are on the deck, and up on each of the masts. A large gauzy Union Jack is at the stern, tinted blue. Part of another ship is seen at the left edge, and another beyond the bow. Of the small number of extant daguerreotypes of ships, few if any show so many sailors. Rarely is the sea calm enough for a clear image.

Fabulous 1/6 plate shows a corner building with a bookstore downstairs. An advertising banner waves beneath the roof. A woman stands at an open window. There is no awning on the framework, perhaps to allow sunlight to fall on the store window and the people posed behind the water trough for horses. Some prints can be clearly seen hung in the store window, to the right of the door. There is something printed above each store window.

A late stereo half accompanies the daguerreotype, showing the same corner (now in "correct" orientation.) It's still a "Books Stationary & Fancy Goods" store. The end board of the awning reads No. 11, "Deiningers." A modern pen inscription on the back of the mount, dated May 1878, reads "The house on corner was across from Christ's Lutheran Church - or next to it." [There was a Church of that name on W. Diamond Street, and on Germantown Avenue.] "We three girls were born there & that was Papa's book storeà." A modern color polaroid shows it now as a tanning salon.

Philadelphia Family - Tatham

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim (Auction: Feb 21, 2008, 51, part 1 / lot 5)

This is the Tatham family. A + plate in octagonal mat from Root's Gallery is a seated portrait of a woman identified on an early slip as "Isabella, wife of Henry B. Tatham - 1851." An 1892 obituary from the New York Times identifies Henry as part of the firm of Tatham and Brother, lead-pipe manufacturers. "Mr Tatham was a prominent figure in the early municipal movements in Philadelphia, having been closely associated with Philip C. Garrett, Henry C. Lee, and the others who attempted the then great task of making things better." Aside from some trivial mat abrasions the plate is excellent [4-], in a fine case with floral design, original spine.

Another + plate portrait of Isabella Tatham is by the Langenheims. Here her face is lightly tinted, and she wears a shawl, but the cap is the same. This almost appears as a variant sitting, and at least is from the same period. It is interesting to compare these portraits by two of the great Philadelphia masters. It is in a fine case with floral design, original spine. [4]. A matching portrait in a similar case (but different mat) is a Langenheim portrait of handsome man. He is too young to be Henry B. Tatham, but is likely his brother and partner, William. This is a fine plate, with just a bit of roughness below his ear. [4-].

A 1/6 plate from Root's Gallery is a seated portrait of woman, with applied coloring. It is sealed, with spots under the glass. A slip identifies her as Mary Ann Tatham dau. of Joseph Tatham. Joseph Tatham, originally from England, was a Quaker author of several religious books. He died in 1843. There are some scratches that appear to be on the glass. [3] The floral case is fine, with a small label "Given to A. M. E. 1941."

+ plate shows good detail of the locomotive stopped at the crossing, with the engineer posed beside the cab, and another worker to the right of the stack. A sign across the street reads "Rail Road Crossing Look Out For The Engine While The à. ings." Some people stand on a railing at the very right the station? A house of the town is at the left. The signs read correctly because this is a copy daguerreotype made by the daguerreotypist with rich detail and clarity.

¢ plate in oval mat, no case. A house is at the right, with a fence in front. To its left is another 2 story building, attached to it. It is my guess that this is a later addition. It does not have a sloped roof, as does the building to the right. There are outside stairs at the left, going up to the second story. On the right of its covered veranda, supported by columns (as is the upper story) stairs go up to the higher veranda of the house at right. Most tantalizing is the sign above the main entrance. We have struggled to decipher this. The best we can come up with so far is something like "VE__ROSUE." The "UE" at the end seems fairly clear, suggesting that the name is French, and so this could possibly be a Canadian. In any case, this left building is likely to be an inn. There is a horse stopped at the left.

Two men stand in the street, between bare trees, in front of a building with a sign for "H. W. HARWOOD & BRO." The trees are protected within wooden frames, indicating that they are still fairly newly planted. The one story building at the right has an unusual arch-top entrance; it doesn't seem to be residence. Attractive light blue solorization.

This is the highest quality I have seen in terms of clarity and coloring. All the appropriate details are finely and sharply gilded. The shiny gray of the woman's dress is superbly rendered. The coloration of the padded chair is rich and wonderfully graded into the shadows. The flesh tones of her face and hands are delicate and well balanced with the other colors. This is in a larger case, probably English, with hinges at the top. The plate is embedded deeply within the plush burgundy velvet surround with gilded oval border. Because it is far from the glass surface, the scan can only approximate the actual richness of the plate.

Luxurious French stereoscopic daguerreotype with hand coloring, sparkling jewels on the woman's bracelet and necklace. The stereo effect is very well realized. This chair and curtain appear in other images in this genre. A variant is in "Die Erotische Daguerreotypie; Sammlung Uwe Scheid" p. 79, bottom. A stereoscopic daguerreotype with this chair is attributed to Alexis Gouin/Braquehais in Janet Buerger, "French Daguerreotypes," No. 214.

Affixed to the black paper backing is a label from a 1998 Christie's NY auction.

She has one hand at her waist; the other holds a book beneath her swollen belly: she is almost holding her unborn child. The book seems something more than a handy studio prop. Somehow I feel she is a poet certainly not just a typical housewife of the period. Her curls remind me of Hariet Beecher Stowe. Her face has the quality of the finest daguerreian portraits, hinting at an inwardness that involves the engaged viewer each time the case is opened. I adore this daguerreotype.

Mother and child

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate

There is a small group of daguerreotypes and other early matted images known as "hidden mothers" - sometimes nannies or even fathers. Generally the mat is much wider than normal, with a small central window. If one removes the mat, one sees the mother or other adult holding and comforting the child, but not intended to be part of the picture and thus concealed by the mat. A related type of image has the caring adult hidden under a blanket, with sometimes only a hand or arm visible.

This is the opposite. The child is still centrally present, but the adoring mother is made an essential part of the picture, fully revealed by the very thin mat. The child is truly vibrant and charming, but also the mother, though only partly seen, is fully present with her wayward curl and tender fingers just visible at the side of her child's head.

The plate has that creamy softly lustrous surface found in the best work of the major Boston studios such as Southworth & Hawes and Whipple, a result of extra silvering and expert preparation.

Terrific + plate shows this clear-eyed young man looking straight at us with his almond eyes. His curls droop down over his ears beneath the hat. A large stickpin penetrates his tie. His light vest is wonderfully rendered with its texture and pink sheen not solarized as would be expected. His hands at his waist provoke. Slight haze over the lower right corner. This is on a "Meade Brothers Importers" plate, in a nice complete case with floral design.

A smock with leggings covers his suit. On the table is a pail with glue, a brush, and very prominent large scissors with which to cut the roll of patterned paper that extends down from the table. On his lap is a tray with various tools, including a palette knife. This may be a base on which he can mix the proper consistency. of glue. It would seem that he is an artist craftsman who can custom make perfectly aligned patterns for tricky areas, not just apply the paper broadside on walls.

This is an unusually detailed occupational portrait, a 1/6 plate signed McElroy on the mat. There were various daguerreotypists by that name. The plate has a number of fine scratches, but the charm and vitality of the image is well preserved. There is a silk pad that might be original, but the geometric thermoplastic case is much later.

That's what it says on his hat. He stands at attention, wearing an unusual spotted jacket with tight waist over his formal clothes. This is a fascinating puzzle. Does this have some political or religious significance? Or is it an occupational portrait? If so, there must be some specific function that could be determined, because I would think a typical night watchman wouldn't have this kind of get-up. 1/6 plate in scalloped mat, full case with leaf and flower design, original spine.

Kerchief at his neck. He seems to be actually playing. Taken from a low angle so we have the unexpected pleasure of seeing his shoe and sock and up into the pants leg of the leg draped over the other knee. He must have been making this foot active while playing, generating the idea for taking the portrait from that angle.

They stand holding hands before the rough wooden board fence, and way back, we see the out of focus trees. The father has a tall hat, the child a straw one. The image is somewhat light, with wipes and shiny areas. Nevertheless the wonderful tender character lures us to fight through the obstacles to appreciate what remains of this great daguerreotype.

Father at right with a basket, son at left beside a crate of apples. Their wagon displays their wares in what must be the poor section of town. 1/6 plate just in a preserver, with the trace of a prior scalloped mat, removed to show more of the image.

The plate is rubbed, the right side light. Not at all well preserved, but nevertheless a precious record of a very rare if not unique daguerreian subject. This type of subject matter is almost never found in daguerreotypes. These subjects could not have afforded to commission this daguerreotype. The artist must have wanted to preserve this record for some personal motive that must be honored today. I present this as a tribute to my friend Ken Appollo, author of "Humble Work & Mad Wanderings; Street Life in the Machine Age." 1/6 plate in full case with original spine.

Two 1/6 plate daguerreotypes in a double papier mache case with Mother of Pearl and Silver Wire inlay (Berg 6 - 87.) In the left compartment is a portrait of a woman, with "Oct 1853" on the edges of the pages of one of the two books on the table beside her. This image is still sealed. Nice coloration. It is probably the reflector at the right edge. The right portrait has "Jan. 1854" on the book. An unusual presentation.

LIEUTENANT RICHARD W. HARGRAVE. 1/9 plate in an oval mat, in a geometric thermoplastic case. A slip attached to the pad has his name. On the back is an unusual presentation of a 1 cent proprietary stamp pasted above a 2 cent blue Playing Card stamp. A pencil inscription on the back of the upper stamp reads "Dick, March 20 1865" and repeats the date. Hargrave was first in the Indiana 17th Infantry. From 2/7/62.he served in "A" Company of the US Army 17th Infantry, and fought at Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg. He went up the ranks to First Lieutenant. 9 days after making the inscription on the revenue stamp, he resigned.

Glass stereo view by Platt Babbitt. Tents set up in the yard of the fort. Duryea and other officers at mess, with black servants. A rare and important view by Babbitt, and the only one I've seen outside Niagara. See the article by Michael McAfee, "5th New York, 'The Red Devils'" in MILITARY IMAGES, Feb/March 2002. I had a special interest in Babbitt because of my long-time interest in the work of George Stacy, whose Niagara views somewhat overlapped with Babbitt's. It seemed significant that Duryea's 5th New York Zouave regiment would soon be photographed at Fortress Monroe in a celebrated series by Stacy.

5" x 7 3/8" positive on a thick glass plate, in what appears to be the original frame. A negative number (#9800) appears in the right margin, in a place that would be found on the negative, and not normally found on prints, so I believe this is a period positive copy made from the original glass negative. The glass is much thicker than would be found on a negative or on an ambrotype plate. The emulsion is on the back, and is covered with white. There are some areas of loss.

The image itself is familiar to me because of the haunting presence of the black boy to the left of the tree, but I can't place it. Thanks to Mike McAfee and Roger Hunt the officer seated on the right is identified as Lieutenant Colonel John K. Robinson of the great 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and that is their flag. They had great service, of course including Gettysburg, so hopefully the scene can be further identified.
