Lady with a Flower

Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs
Courtesy of Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs (ib11)

French sixth plate daguerreotype of a young woman holding flower ca. 1850s. With applied tinting in flesh tone, red (to the flower), and gilt. Housed in a full morocco-leather case.

A finely composed image with flesh-tone applied overall to the sitter's skin.

The daguerreotype's current housing replaces a now-defunct wall frame. Case is in excellent condition but does not close tightly enough to hook closed, padding slightly loose. There is some loss of the silver in areas underneath the mat.

A woman in a lace cap reads her bible through her spectacles as she knits. Lots of fine detail of the lace, the yarn, the printed text. But it's her face and the composition that make the image so appealing. 1/6 plate daguerreotype in stippled arch-top mat, full case with original spine. Very light wispy wipes in the upper right curve of the arch.

Portrait of a woman

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Capitol Gallery
Courtesy of Capitol Gallery (Spring 2007 Auction, #10)

Quarter-plate daguerreotype of a woman by William Edward Kiburn, identified by a gold embossed stamp on the front of the case. Kilburn opened his first studio at 234 Regent Street in London in 1846. After photographing the Queen and Prince he declared himself to be "her Majesty's Daguerreotypist" as evidenced by the two crowns above his studio address. Kilburn employed high class miniature painters such as M. Mansion to delicately hand tint his images. This, in combination with Kilburn's artistic vision and his skillful daguerreian talents, present us with a rare combination not often seen in the early days of photography.

The young woman is posed in front of a wonderful painted backdrop with a castle in the distance to the left and a fern-like plant on the right which has light green highlights. A column is also strategically posed on the right. The clouds have wonderful tints of pink and white while the sky has a beautiful blue hue. Our beautiful young subject's geometric-patterned wrap has an overall tone of blue with gorgeous red and yellow/gold highlights in the design. Gold gilding has been applied to her brooch, chain, rings and the buckle at her waist. Small highlights have been added to the brooch itself. Flesh tones are visible throughout with an extra layer of pink tinting applied to her cheeks and red to her lips.

Portrait of a fashionable young woman holding an image case

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Capitol Gallery
Courtesy of Capitol Gallery (Spring 2007 Auction, #33)

Curious quarter-plate daguerreotype of a fashionable young woman holding the exact same image case that houses her image. Unfortunately this piece has a number of rubs and scratches from past abuse. However, this image offers an historical reference because of an interesting hand written description on the back of the plate that is accompanied by a similar fountain pen inscription behind the daguerreotype. The back of the plate reads, Likeness of Miss Sarah McReynolds, Canal Dover, Ohio, taken July 22, (appears to be 49) by Prof. Wade in 7 seconds. The pen inscription reads 10th seconds and we feel this was an error. Oddly enough we have seen another portrait of a man identified as Mr. Baltzly with this same inscription. Craig's Registry has no reference for a daguerreotypist named Wade in Ohio so we assume he was an amateur experimenting with the daguerreian process.

Portrait of a fashionable older woman

Tintype, 1/4 plate
Capitol Gallery
Courtesy of Capitol Gallery (Spring 2007 Auction, #48)

Tintype of a very fashionable older woman posed before one of the more elaborate backdrops seen with a cased tintype. She wears a beautiful, full black dress with what appears to be velvet highlights on her cuffs and forearms. Rounding out her ensemble is a sheer white fabric with lace cuffs, a lace collar and a lovely carved pendant. The scene shows a row of houses along the water with numerous sailboats and ships. Mountains accent the far horizon. As an added bonus, two gem size tintypes of the woman were tucked in each bottom corner of the preserver at the time of purchase. The image is in outstanding condition with some of the best tonal qualities and contrast seen in a tintype.

The tintype is also stamped melainotype patent, 1856.

There is a half plate showing a mother with a daughter and son. The mother has ringlets; she doesn't seem to be the mother of the group in the previous lot. The daughter is the same girl with ringlets of the previous group. This is in a nice full case marked "Anson" on the velvet pad. The plate has been wiped and sealed around with black tape. [D2] With it is a 1/6 plate in a full case marked "Anson." It's a portrait of a young woman with ringlets, who may be the girl on the right in the ambrotype of the previous lot. [D3] Another 1/6 plate by Anson, in a separated case, shows the boy who appears in the ¢ plate.

This is the highest quality I have seen in terms of clarity and coloring. All the appropriate details are finely and sharply gilded. The shiny gray of the woman's dress is superbly rendered. The coloration of the padded chair is rich and wonderfully graded into the shadows. The flesh tones of her face and hands are delicate and well balanced with the other colors. This is in a larger case, probably English, with hinges at the top. The plate is embedded deeply within the plush burgundy velvet surround with gilded oval border. Because it is far from the glass surface, the scan can only approximate the actual richness of the plate.

Two 1/6 plate daguerreotypes in a double papier mache case with Mother of Pearl and Silver Wire inlay (Berg 6 - 87.) In the left compartment is a portrait of a woman, with "Oct 1853" on the edges of the pages of one of the two books on the table beside her. This image is still sealed. Nice coloration. It is probably the reflector at the right edge. The right portrait has "Jan. 1854" on the book. An unusual presentation.

She has one hand at her waist; the other holds a book beneath her swollen belly: she is almost holding her unborn child. The book seems something more than a handy studio prop. Somehow I feel she is a poet certainly not just a typical housewife of the period. Her curls remind me of Hariet Beecher Stowe. Her face has the quality of the finest daguerreian portraits, hinting at an inwardness that involves the engaged viewer each time the case is opened. I adore this daguerreotype.

Princess Alexandra with her daughter, Princess Louise

Carte de visite
Paul Frecker
Paul Frecker provides the following comments:

"A carte-de-visite showing Princess Alexandra with her daughter, Princess Louise, born in 1867. Taken in September 1868, it was intended to show that the Princess had fully recovered from the bout of rheumatic fever which had struck her in the late winter / early spring of 1867. It proved to be the most popular carte-de-visite of its day. In 1885 Downey remembered that somewhere in the region of 300,000 copies had been sold, and it's not hard to see why. Compared to the stiffness and formality of most portraiture at this time, and Royal portraiture in particular, the freshness and spontaneity is like a splash of cold water!"

Infanta Isabella of Spain, daughter of Queen Isabel II

Carte de visite
Paul Frecker
The daughter of Queen Isabel II of Spain, for two periods, each lasting some six years, she was the Heir Presumptive to the Spanish throne. The most beloved member of the royal family, she was affectionately known by the Spanish people as 'La Chata' [literally, the flat nosed one.] When the Second Republic was proclaimed on 14 April 1931, although she was ill and almost 80, and despite the fact that she could have stayed in Madrid, where she was still enormously popular, she joined the rest of the royal family in exile in Paris. Five days later, she died in the convent at Auteuil on 23 April 1931.

Jennie Cramer
Private collection of Brad Feuerhelm
Jennie Cramer was found floating face down on the shallow shores of the Long Island Sound. It was though that the young beauty had drowned after falling off the pier. Later after the inquest, it was found that Cramer had been repeatedly raped with force and poisoned with arsenic. It is thought that the two murderers were of local wealth. The Malley family ran a department store in the town and two sons were brought to trial on the matter and were acquitted on the merit of family wealth and the corroborative courtside declarations of their prostitute friends. Though today in legal standing this sort of case could not hold water. It is still a testament to the power that money can bring big fish in a small pond. It is indeed likely that the Malley boys had taken liberties with Miss Cramer and killed her when after raping her in fear of the story being leaked. See Virginia A. McConnell's excellent book "Arsenic Under the Elms: Murder in Victorian New Haven" (University of Nebraska Press, 2005) on the case.

Miolan Carvalho (31 December, 1827 - 10 July, 1895)

Marie Caroline (nee Felix Miolan) Carvalho was born in Marseilles on 31 December, 1827. She was a soprano who studied with Duprez and made her debut, in 1849, playing the role of Isabella in the opera, "Robert le Diable." She was with the Paris Opera Company from 1849 until 1855, before joining the company of Theatre-Lyrique in 1856. Mme. Carvalho introduced the role of Gretchen from "Faust" at Theatre-Lyrique in 1859. She married Leon Carvalho the manager of Theatre-Lyrique who held the production rights to Gounod's "Faust." Her soprano voice was considered "shrill" but was well-suited to the difficult performance of The Jewel Song from "Faust." Composer, Choudens, reworked Gounod's "Faust" and the opera became highly popular in Paris beginning in 1862. Carvalho was cast in the role of Marguerite. She also sang the roles of Carlotta in "Phantom of the Opera," and Juliette in "Romeo." She appeared at Convent-Garden, London between the years 1859-1864 and also appeared in the role of Dinorah in Berlin and St. Petersburg.

Jeanne de Marsy (1865-1937)

Paul Frecker
Paul Frecker provides the following comments:

"Jeanne de Marsy was a successful and popular actress in Paris during the 1880's and 1890's. However, it is on her role as a model for Manet and Renoir that her fame rests. In 1881 she sat for the artist as his model for a painting entitled Spring, now in a private collection, and she appears again as one of the figures standing in the background of Manet's famous A Bar at the Folies-BergÞres, now in the Courtauld in London. She was also the subject of Renoir's Portrait of Mlle de Marsy, painted in 1882 and now in a private collection.

Her real name was Anne Darlaud, and she was born in 1865, the daughter of a book-binder and a brocade maker. Her elder sister Eugénie-Marie was also an artist's model and actress. Even for sisters, they looked remarkable alike. The gossip columnists of the time remarked on how both girls were able to take on powerful protectors, while simultaneously retaining their elegant lovers. When Eugénie-Marie died in 1914, she left half a million francs to Jeanne."
