1. | ![]() | Alphonse (28 Rue du Faubourg-St.-Honoré) 1855 (ca) Advertisement for Alphonse Albumen print, embedded on a journal page 3.25 x 2.5 ins (83 x 64 mm) Charles Schwartz Ltd This rare and striking advertisement gives us what may be one of earliest--and most unique--uses of photography in a commercial setting: a page from a journal made by mechanical reproduction (complete with illustrations drawn from engravings), in which an advertiser has embedded an actual, carte-de-visite-sized, albumen print. Readers would not only have a sense of one-to-one scale from this image, but they would also experience, first-hand, the difference in type between the sepia-toned likeness they might commission from the photographer, vs. the broadside-like, b & w engravings pictured above--and with which they'd be most familiar. A fascinating document (of interest to both enthusiasts of early photography, and print media) of the meeting of nascent and existing technologies. In brief translation, the Photographer, one "Alphonse" of Number 28 Rue du Faubourg-St.-Honoré boasts his diverse offerings to the potential client: studio props (paintings, machines, furniture, statues and other objects d'art); his ability to teach any amateur the collodion process; his ability to speak foreign languages, et al. Alphonse keeps studio hours of 10AM-5PM, every day of the week. (Charles Schwartz) |

Black 1870-75. The journal was a newspaper covering events mainly in Japan but also in other countries in the Far East. Importantly it was illustrated with actual photographs which were tipped in to each issue. Although the occasional volume has appeared at auction it remains an exceptionally rare work. Only two or three complete runs of the first series are known to exist. One regrettable reason is that when issues or the odd volume appears the rare photographs are sometimes removed and sold separately. After a short break, Black commenced a second series in July 1876 and the journal was then published monthly. It ran until December 1878. The second series was published in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong and had a much greater focus on China and appears to be even rarer than the first series. This October 1877 issue is contained in its original yellow wrappers measuring 270 x 215mm. The covers contain printed advertisements from the photo studios of

Taken less than three months earlier by Enami at the start the start of the Russo-Japan War, it shows a crowd in front of the Central Newspaper office that is advertising the latest "Extras". Enami had no qualms about jumping between quaint shots of Geisha, Flowers, and Cherry Blossoms into the bustle of news, journal and War photography. After grabbing many "Home Front" images like the above, he joined the Imperial Army as a military photographer and served his country with film and chemicals. In old gilt frame with backing board bearing an advertisement for Vines Photographic Institution, Queen's Road, Clifton, Bristol and an attached albumen print of the entrance to Mr. Vine's establishment. Visible dimensions of image 8 x 6 inches (21x15 cm), dimensions of frame 12.75 x 10.75 inches (32x27 cm). Including manuscript additions, the reverse label reads "No. 5928 / This Photograph was taken / August 3d, 1858 at the Photographic Institution, Queens Road, Clifton. Open from 10 till 4 / Proprietor Mr. H. Vines…" and goes on to offer additional prints, portraits of the deceased or infirm, stereoscopic images, images of artwork, and an "instantaneous process" used to photograph children. The labels most notable feature is of course the attached albumen print which shows the entryway to Mr. Vines establishment, under magnification signs are visible on the gateway reading "Photographic Institution / Mr. Vines…" The print measures about 2-3/8 x 3-1/4 inches (6x8 cm). Reverse label is glued to the wooden backing board, which has warps and splitting. For stability the board has been flattened and glued against a piece of stiff archival matboard on reverse side. |
