Daguerreotype Capitol Gallery Courtesy of Capitol Gallery (Fall 2007 Auction, #2) The image of a lovely young woman, which measures 1"x 1 +", has very nice flesh tones added to her face and a dab of red to the bow below her lace collar. The daguerreotype is in excellent condition with good tonal qualities and contrast. There are some very small dust spots visible on the underside of the glass. The equally gorgeous box has a beautiful pattern of silver and brass inlay, although it is difficult to tell if some areas are painted. There is one thin line on the left side of the image where the brass is missing as seen in the scan. It is a little stiff when opening, and there are some chips missing on top portion of the bottom half. |

A wonderful folk art object, it also reminds me of the array of photographs in Walker Evans' photograph of the studio window. |

When unrolled it reveals 3 crayon portraits in different styles: these are photographic enlargements that are then worked on by hand. They are 16" x 18", backed by cloth. One, of a gentleman, is colored over with charcoal. Another, of his wife, is worked over in brown. The main attraction is a wonderful portrait of a child, in full color. Overpainted enlargements were a major form of photographic commerce in the late 19th Century, that included overpainted tintypes. This portfolio is an important object showing the commercial solicitation of customers for this process. |

24. | ![]() | Unknown artist 1840s-1850s [Button with hands] Button 1.6 cm (5/8 ins) (diameter) Metropolitan Museum of Art Gilman Collection, Purchase, Joyce F. Menschel Gift, 2005, Accession Number: 2005.100.78 Comments from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Accessed: 13 April 2017) This miniature daguerreotype shows two hands resting on a book. The photograph is set into a two-piece gold-washed brass frame with a loop on the reverse for sewing to a garment. The case design with its simple, raised ornamental border is typical of the gilt-metal buttons mass-produced from 1830 to 1850 in several New England factories such as the Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Connecticut, which also manufactured daguerreotype plates. The button was discovered in the early 1980s in a flea market in Massachusetts. The use of buttons for political purposes in the United States began in the 1700s with buttons that proclaimed "Independence," as the goal of the oppressed colonists, and "Long Live the President," in honor of the inauguration of George Washington. But it was not until the 1828 presidential campaign of Andrew Jackson, just twenty years before the likely date of this photograph, that the button became a regular part of American elections. From "Jackson--True Standard" to "I Like Ike," the political button, both with and without pictures, developed into a characteristically American means of both political advertising and personal expression. For many years, the image was believed to represent an anti-slavery motif of two handsone black, one whiteresting on a Bible. Today, after detailed digital imaging, the photograph seems to show the hands of just one individual. The symbolic meaning of this unique button is thus open for reinterpretation. |

Exposed in a studio, he is seated behind a board which sits balanced atop a Jenny Lind type posing table on which lie assorted tools for the work at hand, namely two other daguerreian lockets positioned on the board. He most probably worked in the studio since many daguerreotypists did their own work, If the work was subcontracted to a jeweler, it most probably would have been done on a jewelers bench rather than the make-shift props found in a studio.
