American photographer, painter, journalist and art critic. Traveled with John Ruskin to the Alps and produced from his European travels photographs of classical sites, most notably the Acropolis (1870). His book ‘Poetic Localities: Photographs of Adirondacks, Cambridge, Crete, Italy, Athens‘ (Boston: J.R. Osgood and Company, 1876) included his photographs. His wife was the pre-Raphaelite painter Marie Stillman (née Spartali).
