An accountant, Canadian Methodist missionary and amateur photographer. From 1888 until his death in 1926 he was based in Japan and he left a collection of 2500 items that remain in the collection of the family in Halifax, NS, Canada. He used glass plate negatives, collodion negatives, hand tinted lantern slides, real photo postcards at various times during his stay. He also took photographs during visits to China, Java and Korea.
The first exhibition of his artefacts was in "The Making of History and Artifacts (1888-1926): The Photography of John Cooper Robinson from Meiji-Taisho Japan" (Mark E. Black Gallery, Halifax, NS, Canada - October 7th - November 6th, 2011). A further exhibition was held at the Japanese Embassy (255 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Canada, 30 January - 14 February 2016)
