Herbert G. Ponting
1911, 30 January
Midnight in the Antarctic summer

Carbon print
53 x 74.5 cm (image)

The Royal Collection
RCIN 2580010

Photograph showing the breaking-up of the ice in McMurdo Sound, taken by the light of the midnight sun. In the middle of the Antarctic summer, the sun does not set and it is visible continually throughout the 24-hour cycle. The closer one is to the Pole, the more days of continuous sunlight there will be. Here Ponting has photographed the sun breaking through the clouds at midnight.

Presented to King George V, 1914
