Jaganmohini Sen (d.1898)

Albumen print, hand-coloured
14.6 x 9.8 cm (whole object)

RCIN 2914407

A hand-painted portrait of Jaganmohini Sen, the wife of Keshub Chandra Sen, an Indian-Bengali philosopher and social reformer. She is photographed standing next to a bronze urn on a stand. She wears a blue sari with gold and red borders, without shoes. Her husband Keshub met Queen Victoria in 1870 and it is likely that he and his wife were photographed during their visit to England.

From a blue velvet bound album with gold coloured metal corners which has a watercolour of flowers by Princess Louise, set into the front cover.
