Photograph of the cenotaph within the Tomb of Akbar the Great, Sikandra. The cenotaph is a large block of marble on a raised platform with a checkered floor. It is carved with Persian text and floral motifs. There is a small marble alter to the right with a man sitting on the ground beside it. A cloister with pointed arches and a perforated marble screen surrounds the cenotaph and a chhatri, an elevated dome-shaped pavilion, can be seen above the main structure to the right.
This is one of a series of photographs of Agra by Dr John Murray which were published in a volume with accompanying captions by J Middleton. Murray was an East India Company doctor who used waxed-paper negatives to produce photographs of the Mughal architecture of Agra and the surrounding area.
