Photograph of a diamond mine in Griqualand-West. In the foreground there are a number of huts and a horse in a makeshift stable. There is a rough road behind with piles of earth to the left. To the right there is a line of heavy machinery around the edge of the pit with hundreds of cables descending down into it. Griqualand-West was a British colony in southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds in the area led to vast excavation sites and the mass immigration of workers.
