A hand-coloured photograph of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) seated side-saddle on the horse 'Flora'; she looks downwards to her right towards Princess Louise (1848-1939) who stands profile right holding an umbrella in her right hand. John Brown (1827-83) seen from behind holding horse's bridle with his left hand.
 
Whilst residing at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, the Queen records in her journal for Monday 8th May 1865, that she was 'to be photographed on my pony for that sad picture. I was done 3 times & very successfully.' The 'sad' picture referred to by the Queen was a painting that Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-73) was commissioned to paint of the Queen 'seated on my pony, led by Brown, with a representation of Osborne.' From a blue velvet bound album with gold coloured metal corners which has a watercolour of flowers by Princess Louise, set into the front cover.
