A hand-coloured photograph of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) seated in left side profile on horseback. The Queen wears a cape with hood. John Brown (1826-83) stands on the left holding the reigns to the horse and wears Highland costume and a glengarry hat. Taken at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.
Whilst residing at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, the Queen records in her journal for Monday 8th May 1865, that she was 'to be photographed on my pony for that sad picture. I was done 3 times & very successfully.' The 'sad' picture referred to by the Queen was a painting that Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-73) was commissioned to paint of the Queen 'seated on my pony, led by Brown, with a representation of Osborne.'
