Pipe Major William Ross was Queen Victoria's Piper; this was a position created by Queen Victoria in 1843, after a visit to the Marquess of Breadalbane to Taymouth Castle, where she and Prince Albert heard his Piper and greatly admired the music of bagpipes. Ross was the second person to hold this position.
