[An English translation would be helpful if anyone wishes to share their expertise.]

About the only thing I can decipher is that the photograph was taken in a photographic studio with a Voigtlander camera and had about a 2 second exposure time.

Bergheim, of Austria, was an early member of the Linked Ring Brotherhood. He was known by that group as the "Smudger" and he went on to conceive along with Dallmeyer of London a soft focus lens that was used by Will Cadby, Pierre Dubreuil and Frederik Evans. Evans used the Dallmeyer-Bergheim for portraits and landscapes. Evans said of the lens: "The quality of the image given by the Dallmeyer-Bergheim lens, when at its best focus, pleases my eye extremely for its beautiful sense of modelling. There are no sharp lines anywhere and yet no sense of fuzziness: at close vision the image is of course distinctly unsatisfactory as regards pure definition: but at a proper distance there comes a delightfully real, living sense of modelling that is quite surprising, and most grateful and acceptable to the eye." from: W. Thomas, "The New Bergheim Lens", British Journal of Photography, May 6, 1921. Information taken from an online photographic auction conducted by Auction Team Koln : Lot #867: May 20, 2006

It is not known if Bergheim was using a lens of his own design at the time this photograph was taken. Web research indicates that the #1 Bergheim Soft Focus lens came out in 1895. However, there is a soft-focus look to the reproduction. The above information concerns a Dallmeyer-Bergheim lens dating from 1896. The following is a description of this lens: English: Early Soft Focus Brass Lens With variable focal lenth. Changing the focal length, the degree of diffusion changes as well! Focal length 25 to 40 in. Diameter 4 1/2 in. (Auction Team Koln)

This photograph is mounted to a piece of green paper and serves as the frontis to the November, 1894 issue. It is similar in quality to that by Adolphe Meyer so it would be safe to assume that it was produced in Heliogravure (mounted on green paper) by J. Blechinger, Wien.

This intriguing photograph which translates to "The Prayer" was made by Count D'Assche, listed in the list of exhibitors of the 1894 exposition catalogue alphabetically as "Assche (Comte D'), château de Noailhac (France)." A web search revealed this unknown, yet gifted French photographer as either the occupant or owner (more likely) of the Château de Noailhac. Erected in 1850, the château "is situated in the department Tarn in southwestern France, just south of Castres, and 80 kilometers due east from Toulouse." The château grounds cover 27,000 square meters…16 people can rent out the château by the week.

The Bordezon (sic) reference on the tissue guard is referring to Boissezon, a village near the château. Any other information on the photographer or subject matter of this photograph would be appreciated.

Colls was a master printer and member of the British Linked Ring. Significantly, Colls taught the important English photographer Peter Henry Emerson (who championed Naturalistic Photography) how to print his own photogravures in the late 1880s. Colls also etched the copper plates and made hand-pulled photogravures for the important English series "Sun Artists".

Little is known of Laudon the photographer other than the fact he was an amateur photographer and Baron from Vienna. His more famous relative was most certainly General Gideon Ernst Laudon (1790-1799), an Austrian general from 1790-1799 immortalized in a character drawing by French artist Raphael Jacquemin.

Maskell (Born about 1857) was a founder member of the British Linked Ring and a photographer. Writing to Henry Peach Robinson on April 24, 1892, Maskell proposed a revolutionary new photographic organization that became known as the Linked Ring: "Now it has struck me that it would be good…(to) form a small society, an inner circle, a kind of little Bohemian Club, and I am sending this idea to a small number of others in order that we might meet and make a beginning."

Maskell was both a champion and pioneer for unconventional photographic processes including pinhole photography and the gum bichromate process. This photogravure of a young Dutch girl was taken using a pinhole camera by Maskell. An article titled "Artistic Focus and the Suppression of the Lens" which deals with photography without the aid of a lens, ("pinhole photography") was published in the Photographic Quarterly, Vol. II, No. 5. from October 1890. It can be accessed as a pdf document from the historical documents menu at the website for Nick Dvoracek Pinhole Photography: http://idea.uwosh.edu/nick/pinholephoto.htm

The most comprehensive material on Crooke and Edinburgh photographers can be found at the web site EdinPhoto run by Peter Stubbs (http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/).

William Crooke won many medals for his photography around the world and he used this as a source of advertising, typical of the period. One of the medals won was at Paris in 1897 according to the EdinPhoto site. This photograph of an unknown woman of high society may have won this medal at the 1897 Paris Salon since it was reproduced in the portfolio catalogue.

Here are some comments on Crooke's studio (located at 103 Princes Street in Edinburgh) published in the 1892 edition of the Practical Photographer:

William Crooke was described by the correspondent as "The Boss of the Walk" (the Walk being Princes Street). He wrote:

"Taking a stroll west the other day we observed a magnificent carved doorway being erected in connection with Mr Crooke's studio. It has a glass domed top and glass panels and the name 'Crooke' in embossed brass on the lower panel. The whole affair is most artistic in taste and very pleasing to the eye; as usual, the work exhibited is tip top."

Later, in the April 14th, 1911 issue of the British Journal of Photography, some more observations of Crooke's studio were printed: "The studio is situated in Princes Street. From the windows of the Reception Room, a beautiful view is obtained of Edinburgh Castle, that "'dream of masonry and living rock' and across the Princes Street Gardens to where the smoky homes of the Old Town look down on the magnificent thoroughfare of the Northern capital.

The studios leading off the reception rooms are spacious and convenient, and contain many original features that owe their origin to Mr Crooke's experience and artistic taste.

On the walls we see prints that have done their part in maintaining the Crooke fame. There is a majesty about all the pictures from these studios that is so prevailing that it might well be termed the dominant note in the scheme of Crooke's harmony.

Even childhood, when photographed by Mr Crooke, assumes an aristocratic miein; one can hardly imagine him photographing a slum child and retaining the slum atmosphere. "

Crooke was almost 80 when he died, having been born in Ireland. He died on August 23rd, 1928: In his obituary printed in the British Journal of Photography (August 31, 1928: page #532) it states:

"His portraiture exhibited a characteristic conservatism. He would not employ any process that would not stand the test of time, and thus used platinotype and carbon only, printing by contact from negatives taken direct upon large plates. His awards for portraiture gained at important exhibitions amounted, it is believed, to a greater number than can be credited ot any other photographer of his time."
