An early, lyrical vintage print that foreshadows Kertész's interest in modernist urban abstraction.

According to Kertész expert and historian Robert Gurbo, "This print, along with a number of others had rested in an unassuming corner of André's apartment for many years in stacks of small negative boxes that had once held his 4x5-inch glass plates from the 1920s-30s.

These prints and negatives form the core of one of the great photographic archives of the 20th century. And, like so many other important works of art, they did not emerge unscathed from the two world wars.

Many photographs that André created while he was a soldier during World War I did not survive. André claimed that they had disappeared or were destroyed while he was separated from his company after being wounded and after his fellow soldiers had later been captured. These and others of André's artworks barely survived World War II.

When André and his wife Elizabeth left Paris for America in 1936, he left many negatives and prints behind with a journalist and colleague, Jacqueline Paouillac. Acting as his agent, she continued to make André's material available to the European market."

Au verso, avec numéro du négatif L 196 au crayon par le photographe, avec tampons 'Renger-Foto D.W.B. Essen, Goethestr. 41' et 'Jede Reproduktion verboten'.

Albert Renger-Patzsch, Bestõndige Welt, Munster, Verlag Der Quell, 1947, ill. P. 17.

[Ethereality: Memories of Places You've Never Been]

Gelatin silver print, wet-plate collodion negative

Mark Osterman and France Scully Osterman made negatives of landscapes while traveling through Ireland, northern Spain, Japan and the U.S. over the past 10 years. They used vintage equipment and a portable darkroom to make wet-plate collodion negatives on glass plates. The split-toned prints from these negatives are made on 16" x 20" silver gelatin paper, a synergy of old and new technologies.

Sublimation - order and focus central to maintaining mental state, and effort to order mental space so that unwanted thoughts/desires do not enter,

Putting something in you life that so consumes you that it replaces (at least for a while) something you lack, miss, or has gone and left a gap in your life. Raising bonsai trees takes a lot of time and effort, caring for 38 of them, well, that can certainly take the place of a lost relationship, job, or dream (at least for a little while)
