The Illustration magazine was to play a major part in the diffusion of the color photography process patented by Auguste and Louis LumiÞre in 1903. First of all, it is at the magazine headquarters in Paris that the "miracle of color photography" was officially unveiled on June 10, 1907. The press conference by Auguste Lumiere marked the commercial launch of the product. The guests of the Illustration were presented with color pictures of the LumiÞres, and also of Leon Gimpel, a journalist at the magazine, and a pioneer of photo reportage. Leon Gimpel was initiated to color photography by the LumiÞre Brothers themselves, and therefore he was the ideal person to introduce the new process to the readership of the magazine, which he did in a very didactic and scientific way in this supplement of three pages of text and three pages of pictures published on June 15, 1907.

This color photograph of King Frederic VIII and Queen Louise of Denmark, taken on June 17, 1907 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris and published in the Illustration on June 29, 1907

In the June 22 1907 issue, the Illustration announced the publication of this portrait as follows:

"All the newspapers reported that on Monday morning, before their departure, the King and the Queen of Denmark had been photographed "in color" for the Illustration.

The day before, M. Maurice Herbette, the Ministry Attaché, had presented to the King and the Queen and excellent color picture taken by our journalist Leon Gimpel, in the salon of their Quai d'Orsay apartment. Delighted by this first portrait, the King and the Queen agreed to give a formal "recognition" to the discovery of MM LumiÞre, the French discoverers, and had their color picture taken on the staircase of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The original will be sent to them in Copenhagen through the services of the French Embassy, and we will publish a copy in the next issue of the magazine."

With the publication of this portrait on June 29, 1907, the Illustration indicated "that this color portrait had been developed and printed in 92,000 copies in ten days: all the persons with some knowledge in the art of typography will agree that it is an absolute "tour de force".

Etienne Clementel developed very early in his life a strong artistic sensibility, which he expressed through photography. Close to the impressionist painters, intimate with Monet, he took pictures of nature sceneries with delicate color shades, or also pictures of travels.
