Carbon print produced from a calotype negative by David Octavius Hill & Robert Adamson, 1843-1847, printed ca. 1916. A beautiful carbon print produced early in the 20th century by the female photographer and master printer Jessie Brown Bertram. (See Hans Kraus, "Sun Pictures 11", p. 70 and following.) On period mount 10.25 x 15.5 inches (26x39 cm) with hand-inked borderline.

This print "in permanent carbon" renders the atmosphere of Hill & Adamson's image in rich and unblemished form. The same boys and boat appear in Hill & Adamson's famous portrait of James Linton. See the illustration in Kraus, "Sun Pictures 11", #17a.
