Raised in Ireland, he came to Paris in 1843 where he joined the French naval school (5 November 1843). As naval officer, hydrograph, draftsman and photographer he made several circumnavigations of the world. His early photographs were taken in Newfoundland/Atlantic Canada (1857-1862), Mexico (1863-1866), Chile, Peru and the Pacific Islands including the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia (1865-1868).
His photographs are kept in several museums in Canada, France, Great Britain and the United States and in
private collections.
