Born in Norway he moved to Utah when he was three. His father was a photographer and Frederick followed the same career traveling among the Indian tribes of the Amerian Southwest 1894-1895. A lot of his original work was lost in the San Fransisco earthquake of 1906 but many of his prints survived and he was able to make copy prints from those. He traveled in the West mostly in the period 1886 to 1911 and later he lectured on his adventures.
