'Unknown town, ca. 1853. Half-size daguerreotype. Artist unknown. This scene probably depicts a typical American Industrial town of the 1850s. The clouds have been hand-painted for realistic effect. Most daguerreotype scenes did not record cloud formations except under peculiar atmospheric conditions. Courtesy of Norman Mintz.'
