The temple of Horus was built at Edfu between the reigns of Ptolemy III and Ptolemy XII (246-51 BC) on the site of a much earlier temple. First evidence of historical activity is represented by rock-carving compromising the name of Djet (c.2950 BC), a king of the I Dynasty, and the Edfu area seems to have been occupied for over 17,000 years. The hieroglyphic inscriptions and reliefs on the walls of the temple include the myth of the contendings of Horus and Seth, following the murder of Osiris by the hand of the latter, his own brother.
