Photograph of the interior of the Malakoff fortress. The walls are reinforced with sandbags and wicker fencing and cannons are spaced at intervals. The ground is covered with debris and hills can be seen in the distance. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on 8th September 1855. Lefevre photographed a number of strategic fortresses shortly after they had been abandoned by the Russians.
