Photograph of Wat, a fox terrier dog with coloured patches on his face/ears, mid-body and hind, resting on a cloth-covered table, wearing a collar. The identity of this dog is confusing: the inscription below the photograph describes Wat as the son of Vic, who belonged to Prince Leopold and the nephew of Skip (who belonged to Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught). Wat was given to Princess Beatrice by Prince Leopold in June 1875. He was born March 1875 and died July 1889, aged 14 years and 5 months. However there are other photographs of another 'Wat', said to have been born March 1876 and given to Princess Beatrice by her brother Prince Leopold. The second 'Wat' has patches on different parts of his body. There is a hand-coloured photograph version RCIN 2373685 (you can see the photograph on the fabric under the paint).
