Tina Modotti
1929 (ca)
Marionette

Silver print
7 1/2 x 7 3/4 in (19.1 x 19.7 cm)

Swann Galleries - New York
Courtesy of Swann Galleries (Auction Oct 21, 2008, Lot 61)

With the "Photographs-Tina Modotti, Mexico D.F." hand stamp on verso.

Modotti created an extensive series of photographs involving hands and marionettes made by Louis Bunin, a young artist from Chicago who had come to Mexico to study with Diego Rivera. Bunin was entranced with the puppet show as a means by which to convey socio-political messages, and staged many such shows during the tumultuous period he lived in Mexico.
