Panoramic photograph (2500783.a and 2500783.b) of the Redan taken from the Malakoff, showing the ground where the British troops advanced on 8th September 1855. In the middle distance there is a trench reinforced with wicker gabions. The Redan fortress can be seen on the hillside behind. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on 8th September 1855. Lefevre photographed a number of strategic fortresses shortly after they had been abandoned by the Russians.
