Photograph of an overhead view of the settlement at the base of the rock of Gibraltar. The photograph was taken from the Moorish castle that occupies the west face of the rock. In the left foreground are the crenelated defensive walls of the castle with the rooftops of domestic buildings beyond. The steeper, rocky escarpments of the rock are in the background. The Moorish castle was built in the early 8th century by Tariq ibn-Ziyad and was occupied by the Moors for over 700 years. The castle's principal tower still stands and is known as the Tower of Homage which was used as both domestic quarters for the Castle's occupants and as a jail.

Acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
