Photograph of the stern wheel steamboat 'Onward' on the Fraser River. Two men carrying sacks over their shoulders stand on the gangplank leading from the ship's deck to the shore. On the deck is a cart surrounded by passengers, more of whom can be seen on the upper decks. The steamer's name 'Onward' can be seen on the outside of the cabin, partially obscured. In the left of the foreground is a wooden structure with salmon hanging, drying underneath. In the background are the Cascade mountains.

The Cascade mountains seperate Washington State in the USA from British Columbia in Canada. The highest point in this mountain range is Mount Baker at over 10,000 feet.
