Mary Brock (Greencastle, Ind.)
1865 (ca)
Portrait of a lady

Carte de visite
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs
Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs - Auction (Skylight Gallery Catalog 28,April 30, 2009, #46)

By the female photographer Mary Brock of Grenncastle, Ind. Card imprinted reverse "Photographed by Mary Brock, West Side of Public Square, Greencastle, Ind."

This appears to be an early CDV from the 1860s or 50s. The image is oddly trimmed, with traces of pencil around edges, in a "fancy" pattern like that used on daguerreotype and ambrotype mats. Indeed the size is such that it may have been trimmed by tracing an actual image mat. The effect may have been intended as decoration, or to remove the image of a mat if the CDV was copied from a cased image. (Christopher Wahren)
