Photograph of the entrance to the enclosure of the old Jain temple at Sirpur,Washim District, Berar, taken by Robert Gill in 1871. The armed figures grouped at the entrance are presumably Gill's escort. In the Central Provinces list (1897), Cousens wrote, 'Sirpur, 12 miles west by north of Basim. Famous for the shrine of Antariksha Parsvanatha, a sacred resort of the Jains. There is a small but ancient Jain temple having a horizontal dome with pendants richly carved.' The temple is dated by inscription to 1406. This temple is dated by inscription to 1406. It is star-shaped in plan. Figural sculpture is limited to detachable images placed in three interior niches of the shrine. This view shows the entrance to the shrine.
