Photograph showing view down glacier between cliffs, towards Robeson Channel in the Arctic Ocean with cliffs in the background. This photograph was taken during the British Arctic Expedition, under the command of Captain George Nares, in 1875-6. The expedition set out to reach the North Pole; although unsuccessful, it did reach a Furthest North of 83° 20' 26'' N, which was not to be surpassed for another 20 years. Queen Victoria was presented with a set of photographs from the expedition, taken by Thomas Mitchell, the paymaster on HMS Discovery and George White, assistant engineer on HMS Alert.
