Photograph of Kabul River, taken from Lalpura. A group of soldiers wearing turbans and holding guns are gathered in the foreground to the right, with two horses beside them to the left. Behind them is an area of rough land with a few small buildings and trees. The river extends across the width of the gorge beyond with mountains to either side. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
