Photograph of the city gate, Ajmer, taken by O.S. Baudesson in the 1880s, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. The city of Ajmer became the capital of the Chauhan Rajputs in the 12th century. It was sacked by Muhammad Ghuri in 1193 and later fell to the rulers of Mewar followed by the rulers of Malwa before it was annexed by the Muhgal Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) in 1556. The later Mughal rulers Jahangir and Shah Jahan both lived here for short periods; Shah Jahan built a row of pavilions beside the Ana Sagar Lake. The city remains an important place of pilgrimage due to the dargah of Khwaja Muin-ud-Din Chishti, a Sufi saint who died in 1235.
