King of Clubs

Carte de visite
Creative Commons - Wikipedia
A carte de visite of Sim D. Kehoe, who helped bring Indian-club exercising to the United States. Store web page states: "In 1861, Sim. D. Kehoe, an American fitness enthusiast and businessman, traveled to England where he observed the art of Indian-club swinging. Believing he had found the perfect exercise apparatus, he began to manufacture and sell clubs to the American public in 1862. This is a fascinating image! In the center is Simon Kehoe, "King of Clubs." On top are photos of people who use the clubs (one looks like General McClellan), as well as a list of people to the left, which includes J.C. Heenan, Joe Coburn, Frank Queen, Con Fitzgerald, Sandy Spencer, Charles Pierce, Professor Dermody, Harry Hill, Joe Foote or Foore, James Hamill, Josh Ward, etc. To the right, it gives other that use the clubs: Dudley Kavanagh, Ed Russell, and Neil Bryant. The photo states that these War clubs & dumbells are the best medicine in the world. Interesting caricature! Photographer backmark imprint: C.D. Fredrick's, New York."
