Photograph of the gorge through the Khyber Pass, looking towards the Fort of Ali Masjid. A river in running through the gorge with steep rocky mountains to either side. There is a man wearing a turban standing in the water and another man standing to the left of the river. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
