LIEUTENANT RICHARD W. HARGRAVE. 1/9 plate in an oval mat, in a geometric thermoplastic case. A slip attached to the pad has his name. On the back is an unusual presentation of a 1 cent proprietary stamp pasted above a 2 cent blue Playing Card stamp. A pencil inscription on the back of the upper stamp reads "Dick, March 20 1865" and repeats the date. Hargrave was first in the Indiana 17th Infantry. From 2/7/62.he served in "A" Company of the US Army 17th Infantry, and fought at Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg. He went up the ranks to First Lieutenant. 9 days after making the inscription on the revenue stamp, he resigned.
