"A photographer's life is frequently something like a story book. When United Airlines assigned me to create a collection of pictures for them in Hawaii, I had no idea that this would prove to be the first step towards an assignment for the Oil Industry. I reflected on the best way to handle such contrasts, and I came up with a solution which delighted my client: I decided to humanize the theme. A drilling rig is in itself of little human interest, and I hit upon the notion of establishing the location and dramatizing the image by using the human element. This is one of the few photographs for which I used 1/500th sec., the fastest shutter speed on my Rolleiflex."
